Dead End Clamp: Tensile test

To perform the tensile test, the clamp should be held in the tensile testing machine. The arrangement should be as close to the actual working condition of the clamp as possible. A rigid bar should be placed in the place of cable.

The one-half of the minimum failing load should be applied at the 90° of the conductor axis. And it should be increased at a steady rate. And the failure should not occur at the load less than the specified minimum failing load.

Installation Requirements of Dead End Clamp

Pull out the wedges from the dead end clamp / anchor clamp to make space for messenger line insert.

After previous step, place appropriate messenger line into the dead end clamp's space of the wedges.

Press the both wedges into the dead end clamp along with messenger line. Direction shown on the right picture. Manufacturer advises to easily knock with small hammer both wedges to achieve better fixation.

Place the installed tension clamp on hook, bracket or other similar hanging segment on the wall, pole, etc.

Usage of Dead End Clamp
01.

Power transmission and distribution lines

Mainly cables fixed in low-voltage and medium-voltage overhead lines.

02.

Communication line

In the communication line, dead end Clamp is used to fix the optical cable or cable on the pole or other supporting structures to protect the optical cable or cable from being affected by tension and external forces.

03.

Railway catenary

In the railway catenary, dead end Clamp is used to fix the contact wire on the pillar, bear the tension of the contact wire, and ensure the stable position of the contact wire.

04.

FAQ

Q: What materials are dead end clamps made of?

A: Dead end clamps are typically made of high-strength, corrosion-resistant materials such as galvanized steel, alloy steel, or aluminum alloy. These materials ensure that the clamps can withstand the high tensile forces exerted on them without breaking or deforming.

Q: What are the benefits of using dead end clamps?

A: They prevent sagging and breaking of conductors, which can lead to power outages and other issues. Additionally, they provide a secure connection point for grounding and lightning protection systems.

Q: Can dead end clamps be reused?

A: Some types of dead end clamps, such as bolt-type clamps, can be reused after being removed from the conductor. However, others, such as wedge-type clamps or preformed dead end grips, may be designed for single-use and may not be reusable.

Q: What is the primary function of a dead end clamp?

A: The primary function of a dead end clamp is to fix the conductor securely and to bear the tensile force exerted on it. It ensures that the conductor remains in place and does not sag or break due to the stress of being stretched over long distances or around corners.

Q: How do dead end clamps differ from other types of electrical connectors?

A: Dead end clamps are specifically designed to withstand tensile forces, making them suitable for securing conductors under tension. Other types of electrical connectors, such as lug connectors or splice connectors, are designed for different purposes, such as connecting wires to terminals or splicing two wires together.

Q: Are there any safety concerns associated with dead end clamps?

A: Like any other electrical hardware, dead end clamps must be installed and maintained properly to ensure safety. Incorrect installation or use can lead to failures, such as clamp slippage or conductor breakage, which can pose a risk to personnel and equipment.

Q: What is the typical life expectancy of a dead end clamp?

A: The life expectancy of a dead end clamp depends on several factors, including the material it is made of, the environmental conditions it is exposed to, and the level of tensile force it is subjected to. Proper maintenance and inspection can extend the life of the clamp.
